A Study to Assess the Knowledge regarding Cervical Cancer among staff Nurses in P.S. Medical trust Hospital, Thalakulam, K.K. District.

ABSTRACT:

A descriptive study was conducted to assess the level of knowledge regarding cervical cancer among staff nurses in P.S. Medical Trust Hospital, Thalakulam at Kanyakumari District. Based on the convenient sampling technique, 20 subjects from P.S. Medical Trust Hospital, were selected. Question was given 15% of staff nurses having adequate knowledge 30% of the staff nurses having moderate knowledge and 55% of the staff nurses having inadequate knowledge. There is a significant association between knowledge and sex and there is no significant association between knowledge and (age, education, year of experience and type of family) the selected demographic variables.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

A study to assess the knowledge regarding cervical cancer among staff nurses in P.S. Medical Trust hospital, thalakulam, K.K. District.

 

OBJECTIVES:

1.     To assess the level of knowledge regarding cervical cancer among staff nurses.

2.     To find the association between the knowledge regarding cervical cancer with selected demographic variables.

 

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

The study was conducted in P.S. Medical Trust Hospital, Thalakulam. Convenience sampling technique was used to select the sample. Prior to the data collection permission was obtained from the concern authority of the organization for the conducting the study.

 

Data was obtained using structured knowledge questionnaire regarding cervical cancer were used.  In the score grading is categorized inadequate knowledge, moderate knowledge, and adequate knowledge.

 

RESULTS:

1.     Frequency and percentage distribution of selected demographic variables:

The majority of sample 65% belongs to 20-30 years of age and 3% belongs to 30-40 years of age. Most of the staff nurses 90% were females and 10% were males. Most of the staff nurses 75% were GNM, 25% of the staff nurses were B.Sc(N), 100% of the staff nurses has less than 10 years of experience 65% of the staff nurses were coming from rural area and 35% of the staff nurses were from urban. Regarding the type of family, 75% belongs to the nuclear family and 25% belongs to the joint family.

 

2.     Percentage Distribution of assessment of knowledge regarding cervical cancer among staff nurses:

Percentage distribution of assessment of knowledge regarding cervical cancer is 15% of the staff nurses had adequate knowledge, 30% of the staff nurses had moderate knowledge and 55% of the staff nurses had inadequate knowledge.

3.     Association between knowledge and selected Demographic variables:

The findings of the study revealed that there is a significant association between knowledge and sex and there is no significant association between knowledge and age, educator, year of experience, resident and type of family.

 

LIMITATION:

1.     The study was conducted among the staff nurses only from P.S. Medical Trust Hospital, Thalakulam.

2.     The study was done on a small sample of 20 staff nurses.

 

RECOMMENDATION:

·       The study can be conducted with large number of sample for better generalizability.

·       The self instruction regarding management at cervical cancer can be used in many areas to prevent the cervical cancer among staff nurses.

 

DISCUSSION:

The findings of the study revealed that 15% of the staff nurses had adequate knowledge, 30% had moderate knowledge and 55% of staff nurses had inadequate knowledge.

 

There is a significant association between knowledge and sex and there is no significant association between knowledge and age, education year of experience, resident and type of family.

CONCLUSION:

The study was to assess it knowledge regarding cervical cancer among staff nurses. The result showed that there is most of the staff nurses had inadequate knowledge. The hospital management should periodically organize the in service education related to cervical cancer for improving the knowledge of the staff nurses.
